Tell the relatives apart

See photos of one legally endangered species of Korea next to its close relatives and pick the endangered one. After each answer the tree of life shows why they are easy to mix up.

Where do the species and photos come from?

The endangered species are the 282 taxa of Korea's Wildlife Act (Enforcement Rule, Annex 1), with photos from the species dictionary. Relatives come from the tree of life data: same genus first, then same family, only species with a worldwide sightings (GBIF) record from South Korea that are not themselves legal species. Relative photos are used only with a known author and an open licence (CC0, PD, CC BY, CC BY-SA, KOGL Type 1); a question with fewer than 2 relatives with photos is left out. Rank names follow the Open Tree of Life synthetic tree and national name lists.

Loading the question data.

Prints A4 question sheets (3 per page), the answer key and the photo credits for the current settings and number.

The sheets are made in this browser only; nothing is stored or sent.

Using it in class

  1. Solve together on screen, or print the sheet for groups.
  2. After each answer, check under ‘Why are they easy to mix up?’ whether the relatives share the genus or only the family.
  3. Link it to study 11: the closer the relative, the easier it is for people and for AI to confuse them.
  4. Practise checking an AI answer against the records of close relatives too.
