Twenty years of Korea's endangered species list

Korea's list of endangered wildlife (Annex 1 of the Enforcement Rule) was reissued 41 times between 7 Feb 2005 and 12 May 2026, but its content changed only 6 times. It grew from 221 to 282 entries: 100 added, 39 removed, 27 class changes and 98 renames.

All 41 versions of Annex 1 held by the National Law Information Center were read and entries matched between consecutive versions by Korean and scientific name. Unmatched entries are additions or removals; matched ones were checked for a change of class or name. Renames fall into four classes.

  • spelling — only letters or a Latin ending of a name changed
  • subgenus — a subgenus in parentheses added or dropped
  • nomenclatural — the same unit under another scientific name
  • concept — the protected unit itself changed, e.g. a subspecies added or dropped
